Notes There have been numerous Touchpad issues with the release of Windows 8 and Windows 10.
Especially for scrolling or in some cases the Touchpad becomes completely unresponsive.
Dell are unlikely to update the Touchpad drivers for systems they have not stated to support Windows 10.
For those with older hardware they are simply dell inspiron 3521 i5 drivers windows 8 64 bit unsupported.
Windows 10 will install a generic driver from 2006 which will in most cases give the Touchpad limited functionality.
This can lead to hindered performance regarding the Touchpad.
The last iteration of Windows 10 Touchpad drivers released before the inbuilt Precision Touchpads were pushed through often work with older Touchpads much better than the generic 2006 driver.
However in most cases the installer will reject the hardware, it therefore has to be force installed via the Device Manager.
Attempt to use the latest Dell Driver for Devices with Synaptics Touchpads and the latest Dell Drivers for Devices with Alps Touchpads.
This covers the bulk of Dell models but there are one or two with a Cypress or Elan Touchpads.
Extraction of the old Touchpad Driver listed by Dell for your specific model should allow you to determine if your Touchpad is Synaptics or Alps.
If unsure try the Synaptics one first and then the Alps one second using the procedure outlined.
Note getting the latest correct Touchpad driver in terms of unofficial driver sets can be a bit difficult and requires a bit of experimentation.
I recommend trying with the newest.
This may take several versions to test on your specific model.
If someone has tested your model and decided to stick with an older driver then they probably have a working solution… however perhaps never tried the latest driver I update this page quite often.
You may want to experiment with the latest driver or fall back on their findings.
You may have to further extract using a utility like I advise 7zip version 9.
In this case the generic 2006 Microsoft driver is used.
Select update driver… Select Browse my computer for driver software: Select let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer: Select Have Disk: Paste in the 64 Bit extracted location then select ok: Left click the Dell Touchpad and select next: Accept yes at the warning: The driver will install: Select close: You will see the driver version of the touchpad has now been updated: Select yes to restart: Test the Touchpad!
Play around and see how it works and how stable it is.
There have been numerous problems with TouchPad drivers in Windows 8 and 10 so I would appreciate it if you left feedback in the comments on what Touchpad driver works best for you in your system.
Inspiron 3421 — Windows 10 64 Bit Synaptics 19.
Inspiron 3451 — Windows 10 64 Bit Synaptics 19.
Inspiron 3537 — Windows 10 64 Bit Tested by Dell Synaptics 19.
Latitude Laptop Latitude Dell inspiron 3521 i5 drivers windows 8 64 bit — Windows 10 64 Bit Untested Likely Alps 8.
Latitude E6410 — Windows 10 64 Bit Alps 10.
This gave me the best functionality including two-fingered tapping compared to previous versions.
Confident it should work too for Studio 1745, possibly for other Studio laptops, and hopefully for other Dell Synaptics models.
Vostro 1720 — Windows 10 64 Bit with Alps 7.
Vostro 3330 — Windows 10 64 Bit with Synaptics 19.
Vostro 3558 — Windows 10 64 Bit with Synaptics 19.
Vostro 3560 — Windows 10 64 Bit Tested by Dell with Elan 15.
It worked with my Inspiron 1464 — Windows 10 64 Bit.
Easily download the file and lauch it.
Restart and wait and the issue is solved.
If I put the laptop to sleep, the Windows 10 gestures not longer work like their suppose to.
For instance, 3 finger swipe up no longer brings up Task View, it instead brings up cortana!
Only way to resolve this is by rebooting.
In fact now I have very bad write performance, far less good then samsung official benchmarks.
I also read about disabling the cache flushing option in device policy, but is it a safe move?
It worked for some time after which the erratic behavior started showing up.
So I tried installing older versions v11.
Can anyone suggest me the proper driver for my laptop?
I am running windows 10 home single language.
An error pops up saying that the update installer operation was unsuccesfull.
There has been some feedback that the newer drivers are not installing correctly even on supported systems.
You may need to do some advanced installation of the newer drivers, follow the instructions in this video: Try this with the newest version first 19.
Finally works scroll in Metro aplicatons and Edge, for Dell Vostro 3300!!!
Is necessary have old Dell driver 15.
Touchpad works, but no scroll in system, Metro apps, Edge.
Then download new Dell driver 19.
No uninstall old Dell driver!!!
Only install new driver from Device manager, manually put from Disk.
After reboot, configure Dell touchpad.
Still no scroll only one finger, but perfectly scroll with two fingers.
After many months it works!
I was using synaptics version 19.
So I installed synaptics version 19.
Enjoy Got feedback that version 15.
Nope, re-tried it just for you, and no joy.
The one listed above is the only one I can get to work.
If you do find a more up to date one which will work please let me know.
So the updated driver may or may not work 100 % correctly.
No-ones left feedback for that model yet.
Dell Inspiron E1505 may apply to Inspiron 6400 also running Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
This gave me the best functionality including two-fingered tapping compared to previous versions.
Confident it should work too for Studio 1745, possibly for other Studio laptops, and hopefully for other Dell Synaptics models.
Install generic drivers force way 1.
Windows will say that driver is not compatible.
There are 2 ways to circumvent it: 1.
Disable driver signature enforcement just google this whole phrase.
This is easy but potentially creates security risk as from now any unsigned driver can be installed to the system.
I did mine by signing.
Or maybe it just requires tweaking it has so many parameters.
Mouse-Speed is a multiplier that is set from 0 always run at the basic speed to 2 multiply the calculated speed by 4.
MouseThreshold1 indicates the number of pixels you must move the mouse between interrupts to automatically double the basic speed unless MouseSpeed is not set to 0.
By default, MouseThreshold1 ranges from 0 do not introduce speed-doubling to 10 pixels, but you can set its value to higher than 10 if you like.
Setting the value closer to 1 makes Windows introduce speed-doubling sooner, which causes your pointer to pick up speed.
I could install synaptics driver to dell inspiron 7568 2in1 andutility softwares worked perfectly newtonpadstrokes plustwo-finger-scroll.
I added your note to the list.
I am assuming version 19.
I have two and three-finger swiping back finally!
Thank you for your hard work putting this together.
I was beating this up with the reference drivers and getting nowhere.
Anyway… Inspiron 15 N5010: 19.
None of the v19s worked with self install.
Did not bother trying earlier versions.
It loads over and over and over… until you hit the stop button at the right time.
Hi, First of all, great guide, thank you.
Tried the Alps Alps touchpad, v7.
It will be an Alps Touchpad.
You can try this with Windows 10 also.
You may also try the latest Alps Touchpad driver following the instructions on this page if you do let me know how it works out for you.
Its shitty because the functional drivers dell provides works with windows 8.
What doesnt work in 19.
For a 2009 Vostro 1720 Alps Alps TouchPad, v.
Thank you for the hint… Thanks for reporting your findings.
I expect it will be similar for the Vostro 1520 also.
I have a Dell Inspiron 5523 with Windows 10 installed.
I recently lost touch scroll capabilities, so I installed the latest Synaptics driver, and my touch pad works fine now.
Thanks so much for this guide.
Manually updating the driver to the Synaptics 19.
What is the model of Dell and the operating system.
If its not showing at all?
Many thanks for this information.
Well done for finding it all!
I can confirm that the Windows 10 Alps touchpad driver does work for Dell Latitude E6420.
It seems much better than the previous drivers, so well worth updating.
I only used that system for a little while near the release of Windows 8.
Code 10 The specified request is not a valid operation for the target device what do you suggest?
Right click it and select uninstall it in the Device Manager… You can double click the.
Just get it up and running so everything works.
The hardware I had problems with is Dell Latitude E6510, with Alps touchpad.
Re-purposed work laptop, from 2011, I think it came with Win7.
I upgraded to Win 10.
The Win 10 installation picked 8.
Jerky movement, freezes then big jumps, etc.
I tried several drivers, 8.
The solution for the Dell Latitude E6510 was 8.
I followed your article and installed Synaptics Touchpad driver 19.
Silly thing that costs so much time… Dell Vostro v131 with Synaptics on board.
Tried many options but 18.
Got two finger scroll back!
Other program windows browsers, notepad scroll correctly.
Installed as Dell Touchpad, not as a Synaptics device, so in mouse options there is Dell Touchpad tab opening Dell Touchpad options, not the Synaptics one.
